Beyond Zero Brings Life to Ba-Phalaborwa Victim Empowerment Programme
Ba-Phalaborwa Victim Empowerment Programme (BPVEP) in Thohoyandou is committed to breaking the cycle of violence and offering support to victims of domestic violence and other crimes. Through a combination of workshops, awareness campaigns, and door-to-door visits, BPVEP educates and empowers communities to reduce violence and support victims.
With the funding from Beyond Zero, BPVEP has expanded its reach from six areas to thirteen districts, impacting more lives with critical initiatives. One such initiative is the Men’s Dialogue, where men discuss prevention of gender-based violence and violence amongst themselves as peers which in more than one way does influence how a boy child views conflict resolution. Another critical activity being implemented is the Human Rights Violation Awareness Campaign, which provides a platform for community members to speak out against violation of anyone seeking health services and fostering awareness of human rights in the community.
Healthcare for Men is another key activity, men are encouraged to prioritise their health through health talks that are being hosted for men by men and these beneficiaries are referred to men’s friendly facilities for check-ups and testing, transport is offered for those taking up services including follow up services to ensure ongoing care and support for those in need. Protective equipment and health-related giveaways during community gatherings to encourage more community members to participate in efforts that are meant to build the community.
By working alongside key partners such as Beyond Zero, Department of Social Development and the South African Police Service, BPVEP continues to create a safer and more empowered community in Phalaborwa.
