Blind since 2009, Teekay faced significant challenges growing up, navigating life as someone who didn’t fully understand her identity and was often misunderstood by those around her.

Teekay recalls her early years, sharing that she initially identified as a gay man. “I went through a lot while growing up,” she reflects. “In school, I used to wear a skirt and play netball and indigenous games, representing the Free State. I even placed third nationally.” However, despite these achievements, life took a challenging path after high school. Losing her sight was a life-altering experience, but it didn’t deter her from pursuing education or finding a purpose.

The UnMute Me programme became a turning point in Teekay’s life. Through the information and support it offered; she gained the confidence to embrace her true identity as a transgender woman. “I will forever be grateful for the programme because now I have adequate information,” she says.

Despite her blindness, Teekay’s determination shines brightly. With her newfound self-awareness and empowerment, she decided to establish the Progressive Centre for the Blind, an organisation aimed at creating opportunities and support systems for visually impaired individuals. This endeavour embodies her commitment to making a difference not only for herself but also for others facing similar challenges.
