Equipping young people with the right skills and support is essential for unlocking their potential and guiding them toward sustainable opportunities. This, in turn, will help reduce youth unemployment.

As an indigenous organisation working in some of the country’s most rural areas, Beyond Zero understands the important role of investing in adolescents and young people. Through the Adolescents and Young People (AYP) Programme, we collaborate with sub-recipients to provide essential services, including HIV testing and support, family planning education, trauma counselling, motivation, emotional support, and safe spaces.

One such success story is Morena Modiegi, a 22-year-old from Praktiseer, Limpopo, who joined the AYP programme in November 2022 while seeking family planning services. Through engagement with the programme, she discovered the Economic Strengthening Livelihood (ESL) Programme, which equips young people with skills and opportunities to improve their employability.

“In September 2024, I completed training through the AYP programme, which led to my enrolment in training with a retail company, where I developed shop assistant and cashier skills. This training opened the door to a three-month casual job, and in January 2025, I secured permanent employment. It’s all thanks to the AYP programme. I can’t express how grateful I am,” says Morena.

Her journey is a testament to the power of skills development and structured support in transforming the lives of young people. By investing in education, training, and economic opportunities, the AYP programme continues to uplift young South Africans, paving the way for a healthier, more empowered future.
