In a remarkable collaboration, Beyond Zero and the Eastern Cape AIDS Council launched the #BeyondSilence Human Rights Campaign in East London. The event, held on November 28, 2023, included a powerful launch and a 16-day activism walk. This campaign, an integral part of Beyond Zero’s nationwide Human Rights program, aims to tackle pressing issues such as gender-based violence (GBV), discrimination, and the promotion of human rights, equality, and stigma within the context of HIV, AIDS, and TB.

A crucial symposium was organized at the East London Golf Club on November 27, 2023. This pre-launch event facilitated targeted discussions on the unique challenges faced by adolescents and young people, men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender individuals concerning HIV, AIDS, TB, and Human Rights.

On the following day, an impactful solidarity walk from Beyond Zero HQ to Bufallo City Stadium was organized, spanning from 8 am to 2 pm. This symbolic walk served as a collective expression of solidarity against Human Rights Violations linked to Gender-Based Violence, Intimate Partner Violence, and Femicide.

The main event, held on November 28, saw esteemed guests, including the Executive Mayor of Buffalo City, Councilor Princess Faku, ECAC Head of Secretariat Mr. Vuyisa Dayile, representatives from the Limpopo Department of Health, CSF Chairperson from the Free State Mr. Siphewe Mokoena, key population representatives (KVP), community leaders, and members of the community. This diverse gathering highlighted the collaborative effort required to address the multifaceted issues surrounding HIV, TB, and GBV.

The #BeyondSilence Human Rights Campaign launched in East London stands as a testament to the power of collective action in addressing the complex challenges posed by HIV, AIDS, TB, and GBV. Beyond Zero’s commitment to fostering open conversations, raising awareness, and advocating for human rights and equality serves as a beacon of hope in the journey towards a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Dr Futshane, Beyond Zero’s Programs Director, emphasized the broader significance of the launch aligned with the GBV month. He stated, “As Beyond Zero, we feel that we cannot achieve HIV prevention without addressing human rights violations. The reason we are here now is to launch a campaign, but for us, it is broader than being a campaign. We are trying to ensure that the voices of those who are normally overlooked are heard.”

The collaborative spirit exhibited during this two-day event sets a positive precedent for future endeavors, reinforcing the belief that change is possible when communities and organizations join forces in the pursuit of a common goal. Beyond Zero continues to make significant strides in creating a more inclusive and compassionate world.
